Starting Over and Cleaning Up
Many IDPs who returned to northern Iraq after the war against Daesh found their home villages standing in rubble. Now they have no resources of their own and are dependent on humanitarian aid. Here, Welthungerhilfe is creating income opportunities for women and people with disabilities, who often suffer disadvantages, through cash-for-work programmes that focus on waste disposal, for example, or on cleaning up marketplaces and parks. This is a way to earn a modest income, especially for people who cannot assist in reconstruction efforts that require heavy labour, such as road construction.
